Women And WASH
WoWASH is a Rural Women in WASH Leadership project that sensitizes women in rural Ghana on the need to involve themselves in WASH leadership, reaching over 300 rural women so far.
WoWASH (Women in WASH Leadership) is a project dedicated to sensitizing and empowering women in rural Ghana to actively engage in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) leadership. The project recognizes the vital role that women play in ensuring access to clean water, proper sanitation facilities, and improved hygiene practices in their communities. Since its inception, WoWASH has successfully reached over 300 rural women in the Central and Western Regions.
Women are at the forefront of water, sanitation, and hygiene issues in rural communities, bearing the primary responsibility for water collection, sanitation practices, and family health — yet their voices often go unheard in WASH decision-making. WoWASH aims to change this by sensitizing and empowering rural women to actively participate in WASH leadership.
Through workshops, training sessions, and awareness campaigns, the project educates women on the significance of clean water, proper sanitation, and good hygiene practices, while building the skills, knowledge, and confidence women need to lead WASH-related projects — including training in project management, community mobilization, advocacy, and effective communication.
WoWASH advocates for equal representation and participation of women in decision-making processes related to WASH at the community, district, and national levels, and emphasizes community engagement and collaboration with traditional leaders, local authorities, and other stakeholders to ensure long-term project sustainability.
Looking ahead, WoWASH aims to expand its reach by collaborating with local governments, other NGOs, and international partners, advocating for policies that prioritize gender equality and women’s participation in WASH leadership.
